Bringing MTW to Hungary

Equipping the church
in Hungary.

Marcell and Dorina Bakos are preparing to serve full-time in Hungary, seeking to strengthen a gospel-centered, Reformed witness in the heart of Central Europe.

The Context

Spiritual Landscape in Hungary

Hungary's culture is shaped by a strong Reformation heritage. In the 16th century, the Reformed and Lutheran traditions deeply influenced the nation's intellectual and ecclesial life, and their legacy remains visible today in historic churches and cultural memory.

At the same time, Hungary is undergoing significant secularization. Church attendance is low — around 7% — and according to the 2022 census, fewer than half of Hungarians even identify as Christian in a cultural sense. The result is a growing disconnect between Hungary's Christian heritage and the lived reality of Christian faith.

Mainline churches continue to play an institutional role but are in steady decline, marked by aging congregations. In contrast, the evangelical movement is dynamic. Yet it often faces limited theological depth, unconvincing public witness, and an increasing need for the raising up of a new generation of trained and faithful workers.

"If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved."

Our Vision

Equipping the Church in Hungary

We believe that the only hope capable of transforming Hungary's spiritual landscape is the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. No political system, economic growth or psychological self-help can fill the God-shaped hole in the human heart. As Augustine famously wrote:

"You have made us for Yourself, and our hearts are restless until they rest in You."
Augustine

Hungary needs healthy, gospel-centered churches — and many more of them. It is estimated that nearly 1,000 evangelical churches would be needed to ensure that every Hungarian has reasonable access to a faithful local church. For this reason it is our long-term vision to help plant one or more churches during our ministry. We are grateful to have already witnessed the successful planting of a new church through our congregation over the past decade, giving us firsthand experience of the joys and challenges of church planting.

At the same time, believers must be deeply rooted in the faith. Christians are called not only to grow in their knowledge of Christ and communion with Him, but also to bear faithful witness in their homes, workplaces, and communities. They must know what they believe, why they believe it, and how to articulate the hope of the gospel with confidence and grace. As Carl Trueman has observed, "Our main task is to catechize our own people." If that is true in the West, it is even more urgent in Hungary.

We believe healthy churches are built through the faithful ministry of the Word, robust theology, and believers equipped to engage the intellectual, moral, and cultural challenges of our age with truth and grace. Our prayer is that Christians in Hungary would not merely inherit Christianity as a cultural memory but embrace it as a living faith that transforms every area of life.

For this reason, our immediate desire is to serve faithfully in our local church through teaching, discipleship, apologetics, and ministry among young adults. We also hope to use these years of ministry experience and theological training to discern God's timing for joining a church planting team in the future. Below you can learn more about our short-term (0–5 years) and long-term (5–10 years) ministry goals. We would be delighted to connect with you personally and answer any questions you may have.

About Us

Marcell & Dorina Bakos

Married in 2024, called together to serve the church in their home country of Hungary.

Marcell Bakos
How God found us

Having grown up in a culturally Christian household, Marcell came to faith in Christ in 2015 through the ministry of Cru during his high school years. After serving for several years as a student leader with Cru, his ministry focus gradually shifted to his local church, where he has been a member ever since. There, God cultivated in him a deep passion for young adult ministry and teaching. Encouraged by his pastor, he began pursuing studies in a variety of fields while developing his gifts in writing, speaking, and research, alongside a growing passion for apologetics and theology.

Originally preparing for a career in foreign service, he completed two degrees in international relations before God gradually redirected his gifts and opportunities toward ministry and Christian public engagement. Over the years, he has gained extensive professional experience within the Hungarian think tank and humanitarian sectors, working at the intersection of ideas, culture, public policy, and Christian witness. As his calling toward ministry developed, he pursued theological training first at a local Bible school and later at Birmingham Theological Seminary, where he continues his studies through distance education. His passion is to help Christians develop a thoughtful, historically rooted, and intellectually confident faith that remains firmly centered on the gospel and faithful to the authority of Scripture.

Dorina was raised in a Christian household but came to personal faith in her teenage years through a Christian outreach. She has a wide range of interests, which led her to become a speech therapist while also pursuing photography, which currently occupies much of her time. She walks alongside Marcell in this calling, bringing her own gifts and perspective to their life and ministry together in Hungary.

While Marcell is often drawn toward the intellectual and theological dimensions of ministry, Dorina brings a relational and creative depth that complements his strengths. Her own difficult life experiences, combined with a thoughtful and compassionate disposition, have given her a deep interest in the complexities of the human heart. She has a unique ability to listen well, discern the deeper struggles behind people's circumstances, and point them toward the hope and healing found in Christ. This balance enriches their shared ministry and reflects their desire to care for both the mind and the heart.

Marcell and Dorina became acquainted with MTW through a friend and current MTW missionary, Luke Stannard. They found it to be the best avenue through which to pursue their shared vision for ministry. Having grown up in Hungary, they bring a firsthand understanding of the country's language, culture, and ministry context. As MTW is not currently present in Hungary, they are excited to help establish its ministry there and count it a privilege to serve alongside MTW.
